True to being hailed as "the green pope", Pope Benedict XVI has addressed the faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square right after the recitation of the Angelus last Sunday, December 6 to raise awareness on the environment.
The Pontif has expressed his hope that the Copenhagen Environmental Summit will open the doors to an attitude of respect and responsibility for God's creation. Benedict XVI called for the adoption of "sober and responsible lifestyle, above all towards the poor and future generations". Seing the urgency of the issue at hand, he said that in order to see the success of this conference, all people of God must "respect the laws made by God in nature and rediscover the moral dimension of human life".
The Vatican, as a UN observer, for its part sent a representative to the summit which expects to convene representatives from 170 countries including US President Barack Obama. This conference aims to evaluate and renew pledges made in the Kyoto Protocol and to gather a more deeper commitment from participating countries.
Thr Pope has been a staunch supporter of the environment dedicating his last encyclical to address the needs of the planet. He has also actively started reforestation and installed photovoltaic cells in the vatican's auditorium as part of its environmental movement.
